The Elgin Master Chorale, in collaboration with the Bella Voce Sinfonia, proudly presents a breathtaking performance of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Blizzard Theatre at the Elgin Community College Arts Center.
For the first time in Elgin Master Chorale history, this performance will introduce supertitles, offering real-time English translations of the original German libretto. This innovation will allow audiences to fully engage with the storytelling, drama, and emotion of St. John Passion in an accessible and immersive way.
"Bach’s St. John Passion is one of the most deeply expressive and powerful works ever written," said Andrew Lewis. "Introducing supertitles is a transformative step for us, ensuring that everyone—whether they know the work intimately or are experiencing it for the first time—can connect with its profound message."
This season also marks a major milestone as we celebrate Andrew Lewis’ 20th year as Music Director, honoring two decades of artistic excellence, visionary leadership, and deep community impact. Starting 30 minutes before the concert, Andrew Lewis will lead a lively, informative discussion about the music, composer, and historical context of the being performed. The inaugural Beyond the Bar Lines talk for St. John Passion will begin at 3:00 PM, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at Bach’s masterpiece before the concert begins.
As part of our first ever Community Partner Initiative concert, we are honored to feature Enriching Partnerships for Early Learning (EPEL). We will be collecting diapers (sizes 0-5), books for young children, and monetary donations at the concert to support families in need in the Fox Valley Area.
