Exhibition - Ohana: Ed Moses, Andy Moses, Kelly Berg

The late Ed Moses, almost needs no introduction; a Los Angeles based artist with a career spanning seven decades, garnered both national and international recognition for his innovative and prolific abstract paintings. Born in 1926, on a ship sailing from Hawaii, Ed made California his home. A self-proclaimed rebellious youth, he was soon carousing with a group of artists including Ed Keinholtz, Ed Ruscha, Craig Kauffman, Wallace Berman and Robert Irwin. In 1976, Ed Moses made his museum debut at the Wight Gallery at UCLA, followed by an exhibition of new abstract and cubist paintings at LACMA, marking a pivotal moment in his career. His evolution as a painter came to the forefront. He was also the subject of a major retrospective at MOCA Los Angeles in 1996, reaffirming the importance of his art. Ed emphasized that his art was a product of evolution rather than change, a philosophy encapsulated in his statement, "I don't believe in change. I believe in mutation, and every painting I make comes out of the painting that preceded it. What I want to do is hang out with the materials until something appears that I had nothing to do with."

In 1962, Ed's son, Andy was born. Although he discouraged his son from becoming an artist, Andy was as rebellious as his father. Between growing up surfing the California coast and visiting Hawaii since he was a child, Andy's work has been influenced by nature and its forces. "There was something about... looking towards the changing light over the ocean that imprinted that view in my mind. That endless horizon and that infinite space opened up my mind to the metaphysical and to the sublime. There was also the experience of surfing that when you are moving down the line on a wave, the water is also constantly moving, and the colors are constantly shifting. You have vantage points in the water that you don't have on land. Everything is in motion. There was something about that sensation of motion that also got imprinted in my mind," Andy told Shoutout LA in a 2022 interview. From 1979-1981 he attended legendary CalArts and has continued to exhibit his work in New York, Los Angeles, and abroad over the past thirty-five years. His work is included in the permanent collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Orange County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.

In 2012, Andy married sculptural painter Kelly Berg. Raised in Minnesota, Kelly began drawing and painting at an early age, having an early deep found interest in nature and art that was nourished by frequent trips to the National Parks and visits to the local art museums. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and in 2009 moved to Los Angeles where she met Andy. Bonding over their common interest in Geology, the natural world, and the metaphysical it's no wonder they honeymooned in Hawaii, where Kelly became even more committed to combining painting with sculptural elements when she visited Volcanoes National Park for the first time. "I saw the formations of volcanic rock left from the lava flows, and was captivated by the sharp sculptural forms and how they seemed to represent the power of nature frozen in time.  I wanted to make paintings that are strong and solid like rock, yet that expressed a sense of gesture and movement: something both fleeting and eternal at the same time, which is what I saw in the volcano," Kelly explained in an interview with Curate.com. Kelly's paintings and mixed media sculptural works have been presented in solo exhibitions at galleries and insitutions across the country and internationally. She was the outdoor featured artist for "Art & Nature 2022" at the Laguna Art Museum and created an interactive installation "Pyramidion", featuring seven large-scale reflective pyramid sculptures placed in the landscape of Laguna Beach. Her work has been featured in notable venues including USC Fisher Museum of Art, Museo Ercolanense Portici - Napoli in Italy, The Los Angeles International Airport, The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at California State University, The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University, and The Manhattan Beach Arts Center, as well as her work as part of the permanent collections of The Lancaster Museum of Art and History, The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, and many private and corporate collections.
