The Creation and Invention Of The Modern Cellphone, From Materials To Product
The cell phone in your hand isn't just metal, plastic, circuit boards and a battery. More than 30 minerals from around the world are used in the production of cell phones. Thirteen of those minerals are featured in the Heard's new exhibit. This exhibit explores not only the natural earth elements that go into modern phones but also explores communication over the last century. Most of the minerals used in the exhibit come from the Heard's diverse collections.
Collections and Exhibits Curator, Darlene Sumerfelt stated, "I created this exhibit to enlighten visitors about the raw minerals utilized in manufacturing electronic devices, such as cell phones. Given our museum's emphasis on engaging children, it's important to educate them about the sources of material involved in creating the electronics that play a vital role in their daily lives. Moreover, the exhibit sheds light on the substantial volume of electronic waste generated and emphasizes the importance of recycling practices. Adding a playful element, the exhibit showcases the evolution of communication tools over time, ranging from traditional magazines and newspapers to vintage crank phones and early cell phone models. This exhibit promises an enjoyable and enlightening experience for all visitors."
