Great Expectations
with introduction and Q&A by Gerald Dickens
One of the great translations of literature into film, David Lean's Great Expectations brings Charles Dickens’ masterpiece to life. A mix of coming-of-age story, social satire and gothic fable, Dickens’ story of an orphan, Pip, whose life is forever altered after a chance encounter with a fearsome criminal and the intervention of a mysterious benefactor. At the behest of the wealthy stranger, he is taken to London, where he is transformed into a gentleman. Considered one of the greatest British films ever made, it would win 2 Academy Awards in 1948.
