Cudjo’s story is one that reminds us of the triumph of the human spirit as he survived a lifetime of adversity that brought him from Ghana to the Caribbean and Hanover, N.J., as an enslaved man, to Morristown as a Revolutionary War soldier, and eventually to prosperity in Newark as the city’s first Black businessman.
