Set in 1920s Appalachia, the opera tells the tale of a beautiful young woman who is betrayed and shamed by the members of her tight-knit religious community.
The contemporary, yet orchestral score intertwines Appalachian fiddle tunes with refrains from Protestant revivals and expresses the longing and anguish Susannah feels. At just under two hours and performed in English, Susannah is accessible to everyone.
