Teen Studio: In Focus - Studio Photography

Thursday, Apr 18, 2024 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Kala Art Institute
2990 San Pablo Avenue
510-549-2977

In this photo class, teens will learn the fascinating history and multifaceted applications of studio photography such as fundamentals of the medium such as lighting, working with live models, and composing images within the frame. Participants will also learn about the historical roots of portraiture and how studio photographers influenced the world of fashion as we know it. This workshop will touch upon topics and hands-on techniques listed below:

Session 1: Intro to Portrait Photography
- Participants will learn lighting techniques to produce well-lit environments for models, and basic compositional techniques for portraiture leading to practice in photographing ourselves. A discussion about consent and contemporary issues will also lead participants to practice their approach to photographing individuals.

Session 2: Editorial Photography
- We will expand our lighting techniques and explore different surfaces as material for our photographic still lives. We will set up “still life” or product materials for lighting practices that alter concepts or environments.

Session 3: Fashion Photography
- As we master our lighting techniques, we will introduce live models to be photographed in the studio. This allows us to have real-life experience working with individuals with an interest in fashion! Fashion photography has influenced an influx of photographers which we will review in the context of how fashion shaped media through a contemporary lens. Here, students have the opportunity to experiment with light, fashion, posing, and studio set-up.

Session 4: Intro to Digital Editing
- Once students have gathered images and series ideas, they will have the opportunity to enhance, modify, or edit their images for a final product.

All levels are welcome but participants should be familiar with their camera’s settings. For this class, participants will need a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera, or other camera with a manual exposure mode to adjust the settings for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Make sure you have a new (or free of space) memory card, battery, and charger. If you do not have access to a camera, Kala has a limited number of digital cameras for use. Please contact youtharts@kala.org in advance to ensure availability.
