The season gets underway with the violin concerto by Wynton Marsalis written for Nicola Benedetti. It takes inspiration from her life as a traveling performer and educator who enlightens and delights communities all over the world with the magic of virtuosity. Scored for symphony orchestra, with tremendous respect for the demands of the violin, it is nonetheless written from the perspective of a jazz musician and New Orleans bluesman.
The program concludes with Tchaikovsky’s joyful second symphony which draws upon three Ukrainian folk songs. This is also our homage to perhaps the greatest Russian composer who was invited to open Carnegie Hall in New York in May 1891.
