The mission of The Chatham Historical Society is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art, decorative arts, artifacts, archives, and places of historical interest relating to the History of Chatham and vicinity; and in so doing provide a record of the cultures and the people of our past and thereby inform and educate succeeding generations.

The Chatham Historical Society was organized in 1923. Three years later, The Society acquired the Atwood House - an 18th century Cape located at 347 Stage Harbor Road. Today the museum consists of the Atwood House, furnished throughout in period American antiques, plus seven galleries and two separate buildings--the Stallknecht Mural Barn and the Nickerson Camp. The museum is open in June through October 15, 2006, Tuesday through Saturday from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. and in July and August, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free to members and children under 12 years.
