Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings provides intimate, world-class presentations of repertoire that varies in instrumentation, with special emphasis on brass and woodwinds.
Supplementing its local subscription season with touring and recording, Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings has established a national repuation for artistic excellence. Outstanding critical notice has been garnered from numerous sources, including Stereo Review, Chamber Music, BBC Music Magazine, The New York Times, Audio, the Indianapolis Star, and all of Detroit's major media.
The organization is committed to expanding the repertoire, and has mounted numerous world-premieres by composers of national stature. Recently, DCWS entered into a commissioning consortium with the University of Michigan School of Music and the Oberlin College Conservatory. The project will bring DCWS at least five new works over the next three years.
DCWS educational programs, long central to the organization's mission, include both short and long term residencies with various area schools. Major sponsorship for educational programs comes from Denso International American, an auto parts supplier.
For a number of years, Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings has been sharing staff and administration with the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble and the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. DCWS extends its management services to additional partners that benefit from sharing expertise and resources, providing marketing, public relations and development support to the Motor City Brass Band, and development support to the Rackham Symphony Choir.
